I always wondered – is Dehradun worth a stopover? Thankfully I got an opportunity to visit Dehradun on a work trip and I made the most of Dehradun Tourist Places.
Whenever I heard Dehradun, the first thing that came to mind was Ruskin Bond and his books. He perfectly described the serpent roads, nature trails, lovely cottages among the deodar forests and the cute town!
Dehradun has so much more to offer than just making a landing here for an onward journey to Haridwar, Rishikesh or Mussoorie. Another town that is popular amongst tourists is Nainital.
It is worth spending a day or weekend in Dehradun to see the beautiful places standing tall against time which inspired Ruskin Bond. This blog covers all the places to visit in Dehradun, and shopping places in Dehradun.

About Dehradun
The history of Dehradun city is linked to the stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata. It is believed that after the battle with Ravana, Lord Ram and his brother Laxman visited this town. Dronacharya, the Royal guru to the Kauravas and Pandavas, is believed to have been born and resided in this region. Ancient temples and ruins have been found in the nearby areas, which hints about this.
Dehradun is perfectly nestled in the Doon Valley of the Garhwal mountain ranges of the Himalayas. Due to the mountains around, Dehradun has many things to offer including adventure activities. Dehradun is worth a stopover if it is a trip with family or friends. It is definitely worth checking out during the Mussoorie tour packages.

Dehradun Tourist Places
Forest Research Institute (FRI)
The beautiful architecture of FRI makes it one of the best Dehradun Tourist Places.
Being an environmentalist, I had always dreamt of visiting the Forest Research Institute for its lovely architecture, museums and overall premises. It is one of the most important Universities in India providing education and research opportunities in the field of forestry, the environment and its sub-branches. So while I was in Dehradun, FRI was on the top of my list to visit!
For general visitors, Forest Research Institute is an attraction as many Bollywood movies are shot here and many times one may bump into an ongoing shooting. But other than that, FRI is a heritage complex spread across 2000 acres of land. The university complex is Greco-Roman architecture and houses six museums and a botanical garden. Guided tours are possible in the museum but all can be visited on their own. The six museums are Pathology Museum, Social Forestry Museum, Silviculture Museum, Timbra Museum, Non-Wood Forest Products museum, and Entomology Museum.
Because of the green campus, there are many bird species on the campus and it is a treat to photograph them here. Get your telephoto lens, choose a spot and get clicking!

Sustainable tips for Dehradun Tourist Places
- Dehradun is a hill town and already reeling under the heavy influence of polythene. It is best to avoid polythene bags so do not use single-use or disposable plastic. Dispose of biscuit wrappers, wafer packets, and juice boxes in designated bins. Do not litter the highways, places of tourist interest or riverbanks.
- Respect nature during adventure activities and do not harm it in any form. A single cigarette butt can give rise to fires hurting the economy of the entire region.

Good to know that Anukrati. Hope you had a lovely time in Doon 🙂
Dehradun looks like an amazing place to visit, and based on this I agree several days are needed to see all the things here. I would love to visit the Forest Research Center as well and I love that it’s a green space great for birding. It looks like such a great mix of nature and culture. The little hike up to the Tapovan temple for those views looks well worth it as well.
